A garage is the most popular room for a golf simulator: it usually has the width, the depth and the ceiling that a basement or a spare room lacks, the floor can take the wear, and a stray shot hits a block wall rather than drywall. The catch is that a garage has a door, its tracks and opener, cold winters and hot summers, and often a car that still has to park in it. Jay Lasco, host of Golf Simulator Videos, has built and filmed ten garage simulators, from a net and a launch monitor to a full Carl's Place PRO enclosure with a ceiling-mounted ProTee VX, plus a G-TRAK screen that rolls up so the car can park under it. This page covers what to measure, how to keep parking, each build with its video, and the GSV codes for each.

The short answer
- Measure to the lowest point, not the ceiling: the garage door rail, the opener and anything hanging where you swing. Door hardware often takes 4 to 8 in off the height you can swing in.
- Decide about the car first. A fixed enclosure and a parked car can share a two-car garage side by side. In a one-car garage, a roll-up screen such as the G-TRAK lets the car park where the simulator stands.
- Pick the launch monitor for the room. A unit beside the ball or on the ceiling needs no room behind the golfer; a radar unit behind the ball does.
- Plan for the weather. Year-round play in most of the US means insulation and heat, and often a mini-split.
- Every build below has a GSV video, and every shop has a GSV code or goes through Jay.
What to measure first
Get these numbers before looking at a single product. The wrong enclosure for the ceiling and the wrong launch monitor for the depth are the two most common expensive mistakes Jay sees.
- Ceiling at the lowest point in the hitting zone: under the door rail, the opener and its rail, lights and any beam. Swing your longest club slowly where you will stand to find out what you need.
- Depth from the screen wall to the back wall: the screen, the gap to the tee, the golfer and anything behind the ball.
- Width for the enclosure plus room to build it, and room for a left-handed golfer if one will play.
- The car, if it stays: its length, width and room to open a door beside it.
The free GSV Sim Builder takes all of it: add the garage door with its tracks and opener, pick one of 13 cars from the makers' own figures or enter your own, and it checks the swing, the screen, the projector and the parking together. Below, the builder fits a SIG8 enclosure and a SkyTrak ST MAX beside a parked Ford F-150 in a 24 x 24 ft two-car garage with a 16 ft door.

For a low ceiling, the golf simulator for a low ceiling guide has the heights by launch monitor, and how to build a golf simulator at home has GSV's room rules.
A garage that still parks a car
There are two ways to keep the car. In a two-car garage, put a fixed enclosure in one bay and park in the other, as in the picture above; leave room to open the driver's door and to swing without reaching the car. In a one-car garage, or to keep both bays, use a screen that rolls up out of the way.
The G-TRAK is a motorized, remote-controlled impact screen whose brackets attach around the garage door tracks, so it comes down in front of the closed door to play and rolls up out of the way to park. By G-TRAK's product page, an 8 ft door takes a 7 ft wide screen, a 9 or 10 ft door an 8 ft screen and a 16 ft door a 10, 12 or 14 ft screen; it is made for 96 to 103 in from the floor to the bottom of the door rail, works with single-roller doors only and runs on 110 V, and its manual measures the brackets 24 in from the wall. A Wall Mount Kit hangs it on a wall with no garage door. GSV built and reviewed one in 2024. Every roll-up option for a garage is compared in retractable golf simulator screens.

Shop Indoor Golf sells the G-TRAK in garage packages with a Square Golf or a Garmin R10. Two other roll-up screens hang from the ceiling or a wall instead of the door tracks: the Par2Pro Stealth, in standard or custom widths, and the HomeCourse ProScreen 180. The GSV Sim Builder has all three.

Budgets are Jay's rough all-in figures from his builds, not shop prices; the parts and prices change, so check each shop before you buy.
1. The budget garage build
Jay's original budget garage build is one of the most-watched on the channel: a real launch monitor, a net or screen and a hitting mat, for the least money that gets real shots on a real course. The idea still holds. What goes in it has improved since the video: launch monitors in the budget tier now include camera units such as the Square Golf HE alongside radar units such as the Garmin R10, which also works outdoors, short-throw projectors cost less, and Shop Indoor Golf sells net bundles with a launch monitor and a mat together.

- Garmin R10 Golf Net Practice Bundle$50 off at Shop Indoor Golf with code GSVBUDGET.
2. Shop Indoor Golf SIG10 enclosure
The SIG10 is Jay's usual pick for a serious garage build: a 10 ft wide screen for course play, an enclosure that contains stray shots, and good build quality for the price. By Shop Indoor Golf, the frame is 10 ft 10 in wide, 8 ft 4 in tall and 5 ft deep, with a screen of 10 ft 1 in by 7 ft 7 in. With the 2 in GSV allows on each side and above to assemble it, that is a room at least 11 ft 2 in wide with a ceiling of 8 ft 6 in. Jay used a SkyTrak ST+ in this build; the ST MAX is the current model, and like the ST+ it sits beside the ball, so it needs no room behind the golfer.

3. Carl's Place DIY kit with the flush bottom screen
Jay's updated Carl's Place DIY kit build uses the flush bottom screen, which closes the gap at the base of the screen for a cleaner look and better containment of low shots and chips. The DIY kit suits a garage that needs a custom size: choose the frame size, the screen and the side panels to fit the space, and it works with any launch monitor beside the ball. The Carl's Place code for GSV viewers is not posted; it comes by email from the form in the codes section below.
4. SkyTrak package build
A SkyTrak package is the most direct path to a complete garage simulator for someone who does not want to choose each part: SkyTrak bundles the ST MAX with an enclosure, an impact screen and a hitting mat, and some packages add a projector. Jay's video shows what arrives, how it goes together and the finished garage. SkyTrak sells memberships for its simulation software, so check which one a package includes.

5. Super low budget SIG net and screen
For the least money, this build uses a Shop Indoor Golf net and screen with no full enclosure and no side panels: a real impact screen in a frame. It suits a first build, a temporary setup, a renter who cannot install anything, or a golfer who wants to try simulator practice before buying a full enclosure, and side panels or a full frame can come later. Pair it with a Square Golf HE or a Garmin R10 and a mat.
SIGPRO Golf Net

6. GolfIn SimBooth
The GolfIn SimBooth is a self-contained enclosure that looks like a finished product rather than a frame and a screen, which matters in a shared garage or one people see. Jay built and filmed a full SimBooth garage install, and it works with several launch monitor setups. SimBooth pricing and package deals go through Jay: ask in a free consultation.
GolfIn SimBooth
- GolfIn SimBoothSpecial pricing and discounts for GSV viewers, only through Jay. Email Jay before you order and he connects you with GolfIn.
7. ProTee VX and Carl's Place PRO, ceiling mounted
This premium build pairs the ProTee VX, which mounts on the ceiling above the hitting area and leaves nothing beside or behind the golfer, with the Carl's Place PRO enclosure, a step up from the DIY kit in build quality and screen size. ProTee asks for at least 9 ft of ceiling for the VX, and Shop Indoor Golf gives its mounting height as 9 to 10 ft, so measure first. ProTee VX packages go through Jay, who works with trusted partners on complete ProTee and enclosure builds; the Carl's Place PRO code comes by email.
ProTee VX

8. TruGolf MultiSport 2.0
The TruGolf MultiSport 2.0 adds other sports to a golf simulator, among them baseball, hockey and soccer in GSV's review, which suits a garage that the whole family uses. It works with most enclosure setups. Pricing and packages go through Jay's partner network: ask in a free consultation with your current or planned build.
9. The ultimate luxury garage build
Jay's all-out garage build starts with the Carl's Place PRO enclosure and adds a top launch monitor, a bright short-throw projector, a premium hitting mat, lighting, climate control and tidy cables, each chosen for performance and how long it will last rather than cost. The PRO with a ceiling-mounted launch monitor is the combination that makes a garage feel like a simulator studio rather than a garage with equipment in it. Jay's advice: if you are going to build it, build it right the first time, which is almost always cheaper than rebuilding.
Radar or camera in a garage?
The launch monitor decides how deep the garage has to be. A camera unit beside the ball, such as a SkyTrak, a Foresight GC3 or a Square Golf HE, needs no room behind the golfer. A radar unit behind the ball, such as a Garmin R10 or a FlightScope Mevo Gen 2, needs its maker's distance behind the ball on top of the gap to the screen, which gets tight in a shallow garage. An overhead unit such as the ProTee VX or the Uneekor EYE XO2 needs nothing on the floor, but needs the ceiling height its maker specifies. The GSV Sim Builder places each unit at its maker's distance and tells you whether it fits.
Heat, cooling and the floor
- Insulate first: the garage door and the walls. Without insulation, any heater or air conditioner works harder and costs more to run.
- A ductless mini-split is the most common way to heat and cool a garage simulator for year-round play.
- Electronics and cold: launch monitors, projectors and PCs all have operating temperatures. Bring the room up to temperature before you play in winter.
- The floor: a concrete floor under a hitting mat is hard on joints and on a mat. The golf simulator flooring guide covers turf, pads and what goes under them.
The projector
A garage build almost always needs a short-throw projector, mounted on the ceiling above or just in front of the golfer, so that it fills the screen without sitting in the swing or casting the golfer's shadow. In a garage you cannot fully darken, a brighter projector helps. The golf simulator projector guide covers throw distance and brightness for each screen size, and the GSV Sim Builder places the projector for your room.
Swing indoors with caution. Check the clearance under the door rail and the opener with slow practice swings with your longest club before a full swing, and keep the garage door closed and the car out of the swing. Golf Simulator Videos and its affiliates take no responsibility for your safety, or for any injury or damage, when you swing indoors.

Garage golf simulator questions
What is the minimum ceiling height for a garage golf simulator?
Most golfers need about 9 ft where they swing to use a driver comfortably, measured to the lowest point: the garage door rail, the opener or a light, not the ceiling itself. Door hardware often takes 4 to 8 in off. A SIG10 enclosure needs an 8 ft 6 in ceiling to assemble, and ProTee asks for at least 9 ft of ceiling for the VX.
How deep does a garage need to be for a golf simulator?
It depends on the launch monitor. With a unit beside the ball or on the ceiling, the screen, the gap to the tee and the golfer are what count, and a single-car garage is usually deep enough. A radar unit behind the ball adds its maker's distance behind the ball. The GSV Sim Builder works it out for your garage.
Can you park a car in a garage with a golf simulator?
Yes, two ways. In a two-car garage, a fixed enclosure in one bay and the car in the other, with room to open the door. Or a roll-up screen such as the G-TRAK, which attaches to the garage door tracks and rolls up so the car parks where the golfer stands. The GSV Sim Builder checks both with 13 cars at their makers' sizes.
What is the G-TRAK garage screen?
A motorized impact screen whose brackets attach around the garage door tracks, so it comes down in front of the closed door to play and rolls up out of the way to park. By G-TRAK, it is made for 96 to 103 in from the floor to the bottom of the door rail and fits single-roller doors; a 16 ft door takes a 10, 12 or 14 ft wide screen. GSV250 takes $250 off the G-TRAK packages at Shop Indoor Golf.
Radar or camera launch monitor for a garage?
For most garages, a unit beside the ball, such as a SkyTrak, a Foresight GC3 or a Square Golf HE, or one on the ceiling, such as the ProTee VX, because neither needs room behind the golfer. A radar unit behind the ball, such as a Garmin R10, works when the garage is deep enough.
Do you need climate control for a garage golf simulator?
For year-round play in most of the US, yes. Insulate the garage door and walls first, then heat and cool it; a ductless mini-split is the most common choice. Launch monitors, projectors and PCs have operating temperatures, so warm the room before playing in winter.
What projector works in a garage golf simulator?
A short-throw projector on the ceiling, so it fills the screen without sitting in the swing, and a brighter one if the garage cannot be fully darkened. The GSV projector guide covers throw distance and brightness for each screen size.
Which garage build fits which garage?
For a standard garage with a 9 ft ceiling, the Shop Indoor Golf SIG10 enclosure with a launch monitor beside the ball. With the ceiling height for it, a Carl's Place PRO with a ceiling-mounted launch monitor. To keep parking a car, the G-TRAK.
How do you get the Carl's Place discount code?
