Golf Simulator Room Size Calculator: Room Dimensions and Ceiling Height

What room dimensions and ceiling height does a golf simulator need, and will one fit in your room? Enter the width, the length and the ceiling height, and the GSV room size checker tests every launch monitor in the GSV Sim Builder against your room: where the tee goes, which enclosure fits, whether a driver clears the ceiling, and whether there is room behind the golfer and behind the ball. It is the 3D Sim Builder's own room check, on one page. Jay Lasco, host of Golf Simulator Videos, worked out GSV's room rules over years of building and testing simulators, and the checker uses them.

Golf simulator room dimensions: GSV's rules

MeasurementGSV's ruleWhy
Tee to screen8 ft at the least, 10 ft ideal, 12 ft at the mostCloser, the ball can bounce back; further, the picture feels far away
Tee to the back wall7 ft for a 5 ft 9 in golferRoom for the driver behind the golfer; more for a taller golfer
Ball to the wall behind the golfer7 ft for a 5 ft 9 in golferThe swing across the room
Screen to the wall behind it12 in for an enclosureRoom for the screen to move when it is hit

Every distance is measured from the tee, not from the edge of the mat. With the tee 10 ft from the screen, the depth adds up to about 18 ft: 1 ft behind the screen, 10 ft to the tee and 7 ft behind it. The checker passes a shorter room with a caution where it gives up some of the space behind the tee.

Golf simulator ceiling height

The ceiling is the one measurement that cannot be fixed later, and it depends on the golfer more than the gear. From the swing model in the GSV Sim Builder, with the golfer on a 2.5 in mat:

GolferA driver clears atWith 6 in of headroom
5 ft 6 in8 ft 1 in8 ft 7 in
5 ft 9 in8 ft 5 in8 ft 11 in
6 ft8 ft 9 in9 ft 3 in
6 ft 2 in9 ft9 ft 6 in
6 ft 4 in9 ft 3 in9 ft 9 in

These are GSV estimates: no maker publishes a swing height, and swings differ. Measure at the lowest point over where you swing, which in a basement is often a beam or a duct and in a garage the door track or the opener. Take a slow practice swing with a driver in the spot before buying anything. For a ceiling under 9 ft, the low ceiling guide has the launch monitors and enclosures that fit.

The launch monitor changes the room

  • Beside the ball (SkyTrak, Square Golf, Foresight GC3, Garmin R50 and others): needs nothing behind the golfer beyond the swing, so it suits the shortest rooms.
  • On the ceiling (Uneekor EYE XO2, ProTee VX, Trackman iO and others): needs its maker's mounting height, usually about 9 to 10 ft, and keeps the floor clear for left and right-handed golfers.
  • Behind the ball (radar units such as the FlightScope Mevo Gen2, Garmin R10 and Trackman 4): needs its own distance behind the ball, 6 to 10 ft by model, which shares the space behind the golfer, and enough ball flight in front of the golfer, so it generally needs one of the deepest rooms.

The checker groups its answer the same way, so a room that is too short for a radar unit can still show every unit beside the ball as a fit.

Next: the 3D Sim Builder

Every result opens in the GSV Sim Builder, where you can add a beam, a duct or a garage door, move the tee, pick the enclosure, the projector and the mat, and see the swing in 3D. For a garage, the garage golf simulator guide covers parking a car beside it.

Golf simulator room size questions

What size room do you need for a golf simulator?

It depends on the launch monitor and the golfer. With the tee 10 ft from the screen, GSV's rules add up to about 18 ft deep, and most golfers need about 9 ft of ceiling to swing a driver. A unit beside the ball works in less: the GSV Sim Builder fits, with two cautions, a SIG10 enclosure in a 12 x 16 ft room with a 9 ft ceiling and the tee 8 ft from the screen.

What is the minimum ceiling height for a golf simulator?

From the swing model in the GSV Sim Builder, a 5 ft 9 in golfer on a 2.5 in mat clears 8 ft 5 in with a driver, and 8 ft 11 in leaves 6 in of headroom. A 6 ft golfer clears 8 ft 9 in. These are GSV estimates, so take a slow practice swing with a driver in the spot before buying anything.

How far should the tee be from the screen?

GSV's rule is 8 ft at the least, 10 ft ideal and 12 ft at the most. Closer, the ball can bounce back; further, the picture feels far away.

Which launch monitors work in a small room?

Units beside the ball, such as the SkyTrak, Square Golf and Foresight GC3, need nothing behind the golfer beyond the swing, so they suit the shortest rooms. Radar units behind the ball generally need one of the deepest rooms. The checker shows which fit yours.

Do left and right-handed golfers need a different room?

The checker has a setting for right-handed, left-handed or both. A unit beside the ball sits across the ball from the golfer, so a room shared by a left and a right-handed golfer either moves the unit between golfers, puts a radar unit behind a tee in the middle of the room, or uses one on the ceiling, such as the ProTee VX, which works for both.

Is the room size checker the same as the GSV Sim Builder?

Yes. It runs the Sim Builder's own room check for every launch monitor at once, with the enclosure and tee each would use. Open any result in the 3D builder to add a beam, a duct or a garage door and see the swing.

Can a golf simulator go in a garage or a basement?

Yes. Measure to the lowest point over the swing: in a garage that is often the door track or the opener, and in a basement a beam or a duct, rather than the ceiling. The garage golf simulator guide covers parking a car beside it, and the 3D Sim Builder has beams, ducts and garage doors to add.
