An overhead launch monitor hangs from the ceiling and reads the ball and the club from above. Nothing sits on the floor to trip over or hit, left and right-handed golfers share it without moving anything, and most of them need no marked balls. In return they need a ceiling of about 9 to 10 ft and a fixed install. Here are the overhead launch monitors sold in 2026, ProTee VX, Uneekor EYE XO2 and EYE XR, Trackman iO, Foresight Falcon, GolfJoy Rigel and TruGolf APOGEE, with the maker's price, ceiling height, mounting spot, hitting zone, subscription and GSPro support for each. Jay Lasco, host of Golf Simulator Videos, has run overhead units since 2020: an Uneekor QED, then an EYE XO and an EYE XO2, his daily driver, and he has tested the Trackman iO and the ProTee VX.

Ceiling height and mounting spot
| Unit | Height, by the maker | Where it hangs |
|---|---|---|
| ProTee VX | 9 to 10 ft, ceiling to hitting surface | 3 ft 4 in to 3 ft 7 in ahead of the ball |
| Uneekor EYE XO2 | 9 to 10 ft | 3 ft 6 in ahead of the tee |
| Uneekor EYE XR | 9 to 10 ft | 3 ft 6 in behind the tee |
| Trackman iO | 8 ft 10 in to 10 ft 6 in, by version | Ahead of the tee |
| Foresight Falcon | 9 ft 6 in to 10 ft 6 in | 4 ft from the hitting mat |
| GolfJoy Rigel | 9 ft to 10 ft 2 in, on the Rigel 2 | 43.3 in ahead of the tee |
| TruGolf APOGEE | 9 to 10 ft above the hitting surface | 21 to 25 in ahead of the tee |
Makers measure differently, some from the floor and some from the hitting surface, so a mat or a platform counts. The Trackman iO comes in versions for different ceilings: the standard iO for 8 ft 10 in to 9 ft 6 in, and the iO DUO, built for left and right-handed golfers, for 9 ft 4 in and up. ProTee says the VX works down to 8 ft 8 in. Under 9 ft, see the low ceiling guide; the swing itself needs about 9 ft for most golfers with a driver.
Each overhead launch monitor
ProTee VX
Two high-speed cameras and AI read the ball and the club with no stickers and no marked balls: club speed, path, face angle, attack angle, dynamic loft, lie and impact point. ProTee Labs comes with it, with no subscription for the life of the unit, and it has an official GSPro connector. The hitting zone is 25 x 21 in, and golfers switch hands with no recalibration.
Jay installed and tested one in 2026, on the crossbar of the Carl's Place PRO enclosure in his garage, 15.5 x 15 x 10 ft. Short game was instant, 3 ft putts read with no trouble, and the impact replay shows the face at the ball. It left him impressed at the price. Full details: the ProTee VX guide.

Uneekor EYE XO2
Three high-speed cameras over a 28 x 21 in hitting zone, all 9 club figures, and no marked balls; club stickers are optional. Uneekor's free Player plan runs its own software, and the $199 a year Pro plan adds third-party software such as GSPro. Uneekor's CEO told Jay the XO2 was designed for the larger zone and trouble mats, rough and bunker, rather than for more data or accuracy than the EYE XO. For Jay, the wider zone is what lets a left-handed golfer tee up off the mat in a 15 ft wide room. It is his daily driver, in GSV's basement studio. See EYE XO2 vs GCQuad and ProTee VX vs EYE XO2.

Trackman iO
An infrared camera with radar, no marked balls and no club stickers, and a webcam that lines the unit up with the screen. Trackman lists it from $13,995 with the first year of software included, then $700 a year for Home or $1,100 for Home Complete, which adds the full club data and 500+ courses. It runs Trackman's own software, and GSPro does not list it. Trackman's head of indoor told Jay that installing it is about as hard as assembling flat-pack furniture; its impact video on the range became one of Jay's favorite features. GSV's own iO is in its basement studio. See the Trackman golf simulator guide.
Foresight Falcon
Four cameras over a 59 x 28 in hitting zone, the largest here, with club data from small stickers in the box: path, attack angle, face angle, loft, lie, impact location and closure rate. It needs a ceiling of 9 ft 6 in to 10 ft 6 in and a joist that holds 75 lb, by Foresight. Foresight+ is free for basic use, $199 a year for Silver or $599 for Gold, which GSPro requires. Jay saw it at the 2024 PGA Show; GSV has not tested one in the studio. See the Foresight Falcon guide.
Uneekor EYE XR
Uneekor's replacement for the QED mounts 3 ft 6 in behind the tee, so it reads from behind the golfer. Two cameras, any ball, no stickers, and four club figures: club speed, smash, path and face angle, with face angle calculated. Its zone is about 14 x 12 in, smaller than the XO2's, and it needs 10 ft from the tee to the screen. It costs $5,999.
GolfJoy Rigel 2, Rigel 3 and Rigel 3 Pro
GolfJoy's overhead units hang 43.3 in ahead of the tee, read any ball and work with GSPro, E6 Connect and Creative Golf. The Rigel 2 has two cameras, a hitting zone of about 16 x 16 in and left and right-handed support at $6,999, with 6 months of GolfJoy Diamond included. The Rigel 3 and Rigel 3 Pro have three cameras and up to 11 club figures, with a zone of about 24 x 24 in on the Pro, at $10,999 and $13,999. GSV has not tested a Rigel.
TruGolf APOGEE
A ceiling-mounted stereo camera, 9 to 10 ft above the hitting surface and 21 to 25 in ahead of the tee, with ball data and club speed, attack angle, face angle and path, and an E6 ENJOY subscription included. Its tee box is small, 10 x 8 in, and GSPro does not list it. Jay used one for his first look at E6 Apex. TruGolf's regular price is $9,000.
Room size for an overhead launch monitor
An overhead unit asks nothing of the floor, so the room depth comes down to the screen, the tee and the swing. In the GSV Sim Builder, a room 14 ft wide with a 10 ft ceiling and a 5 ft 9 in golfer needs these depths:
| Unit | Shortest room | Nothing to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Trackman iO | 15 ft 1 in | 17 ft |
| ProTee VX | 15 ft 3 in | 17 ft |
| Uneekor EYE XO2 | 15 ft 4 in | 17 ft |
| GolfJoy Rigel | 15 ft 5 in | 17 ft 1 in |
| Foresight Falcon | 16 ft 4 in | 18 ft |
The projector has to clear the unit too: a ceiling launch monitor can sit in the projector's light and throw a shadow on the screen, which the projector calculator checks. Try your own room in the room size checker or the GSV Sim Builder.
Left and right-handed golfers
This is the overhead unit's biggest advantage. A unit beside the ball has to move to the other side for a left-handed golfer; one on the ceiling reads both from the same spot, as long as the ball sits in its hitting zone. The wider the zone, the more room to tee up a left-handed golfer: 25 in on the ProTee VX, 28 in on the EYE XO2, and 59 in on the Falcon. Trackman's iO DUO is the version built for both.
Overhead or on the floor?
- Overhead for a dedicated room with 9 ft or more, golfers of both hands, and a clean floor with nothing to hit.
- Beside the ball for a low ceiling, a shorter room, a lower budget, or taking it to the range: the Square Golf, SkyTrak, Uneekor EYE MINI and Foresight GC3, for example.
Overhead units are not automatically more accurate; the camera count, the software and the setup matter more than where the unit hangs. The launch monitor finder filters by where the unit sits, budget and room.

Overhead launch monitor questions
What is the best overhead golf launch monitor?
It depends on the budget and the room. The ProTee VX gives full club data with no subscription for $6,500; the Uneekor EYE XO2 has a bigger zone and trouble mats; the Trackman iO works from the lowest ceiling with Trackman's software; the Foresight Falcon has the largest hitting zone.
How high does the ceiling need to be for an overhead launch monitor?
Most makers ask for about 9 to 10 ft: the ProTee VX 9 to 10 ft, the Uneekor EYE XO2 9 to 10 ft, the Foresight Falcon 9 ft 6 in to 10 ft 6 in. The standard Trackman iO starts at 8 ft 10 in. Makers measure from the floor or the hitting surface, so a mat counts.
Can you mount an overhead launch monitor under a 9 ft ceiling?
A few: the standard Trackman iO from 8 ft 10 in, and ProTee says the VX works down to 8 ft 8 in. The swing still needs about 9 ft for most golfers with a driver, so a launch monitor beside the ball is usually the better fit under 9 ft.
Are overhead launch monitors more accurate than ones on the floor?
Not because of where they hang. Accuracy comes from the cameras, the software and the setup. Uneekor's CEO told Jay the EYE XO2 was designed for a bigger zone and trouble mats, not for more accuracy than the EYE XO.
Which overhead launch monitor has no subscription?
The ProTee VX: ProTee Labs comes with it and has no yearly fee. Uneekor has a free Player plan, with $199 a year for GSPro; Foresight+ has a free plan, with $599 a year for GSPro; the Trackman iO needs a yearly plan after the first year.
Do overhead launch monitors work for left-handed golfers?
Yes, it is their main advantage: one on the ceiling reads both hands from the same spot, as long as the ball is in its hitting zone. A wider zone gives more room to tee up a left-handed golfer, and Trackman's iO DUO is built for both.
Which overhead launch monitors work with GSPro?
GSPro lists the ProTee VX, the Uneekor EYE XO2, EYE XO, EYE XR and QED, the Foresight Falcon and the GolfJoy Rigel 2, Rigel 3 and Rigel 3 Pro. It does not list the Trackman iO or the TruGolf APOGEE.
Do overhead launch monitors need marked balls or club stickers?
No marked balls on any current unit here. The ProTee VX and Trackman iO need no club stickers; the Foresight Falcon uses small stickers for club data, and stickers are optional on the Uneekor EYE XO2.
