Golf Simulator for a Low Ceiling: Height Chart and What Fits Under 9 ft

A low ceiling does not rule out a golf simulator. It decides three things: the launch monitor, the enclosure and where the tee goes. This page gives the ceiling a driver needs for golfers from 5 ft to 6 ft 4 in, which launch monitors and enclosures fit under 9 ft, and where a beam or a duct gets in the way of the swing. The figures come from the swing model in the GSV Sim Builder, GSV's free room planner, and from each maker's own manuals, support pages and product pages. Jay Lasco, host of Golf Simulator Videos, has tested launch monitors from every major brand on camera, on the ceiling and on the floor.

The short answer

  • A driver needs 8 ft 1 in to 9 ft 3 in for golfers from 5 ft 6 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 6 in more to swing with room to spare. The chart below has each height.
  • Under 9 ft, put the launch monitor on the floor, beside the ball or behind it. Most floor units need no height of their own. Ceiling units are specified from about 9 ft, and the lowest version of the Trackman iO from 8 ft 10 in.
  • Under 8 ft 6 in, pick the screen with care. The SIG8 and SIG10 enclosures need 8 ft 6 in, the Carl's Place DIY enclosures 8 ft 2 in. Below that, a built-in screen framed into the room.
  • Measure the lowest point, not the ceiling. A beam or a duct matters most about 3 to 4 ft behind the ball and 3 to 4 ft ahead of it, where the club is highest. Right over the ball it can be clear.

Golf simulator ceiling height chart

This is the ceiling a driver swing clears, by the golfer's height, from the swing model in the GSV Sim Builder. The golfer stands on a 2.5 in hitting mat.

6 ft8 ft 9 in9 ft 3 in
6 ft 2 in9 ft9 ft 6 in
6 ft 4 in9 ft 3 in9 ft 9 in

These are GSV estimates. No manufacturer publishes a swing height, and swings differ: a long, upright swing needs more, a flat one less. Before buying anything, take a slow practice swing with a driver where the tee will go. A ceiling too low for a driver can still work for irons and wedges.

The mat counts. The golfer stands on it, so every inch of mat, turf or platform under the golfer comes off the ceiling. A raised hitting platform 6 in high needs 6 in more ceiling than the chart.

Beams, ducts and the lowest point

The swing has to clear the lowest thing above it, not the ceiling. In a basement that is often a beam, a duct or a soffit; in a garage it is often the door track or the opener; anywhere it can be a light. Where it sits matters as much as how low it hangs, because a driver is highest well behind the ball on the backswing and well ahead of it on the follow-through, not over the ball.

Here is what the GSV Sim Builder gives for a beam 6 in wide running across the room, side to side, with its bottom 8 ft off the floor, under a 9 ft ceiling. The golfer is 5 ft 9 in and right-handed. The distances are from the ball to the middle of the beam.

In the swing2 ft 7 in to 3 ft 9 in3 ft 1 in to 4 ft 3 in

The same beam hung only 6 in down, its bottom 8 ft 6 in off the floor, draws a caution only where the 8 ft beam is in the swing, and is clear everywhere else. For a 6 ft golfer the bands grow: in the swing from 2 ft 4 in to 4 ft 2 in behind the ball and from 2 ft 10 in to 4 ft 8 in ahead of it.

The same beam over the ball: the swing passes under it, drawn in green.

So moving the tee can matter more than the ceiling. In a basement with one low beam, a tee that puts the beam over the ball, or more than about 4 ft 9 in from it, can turn a room that does not fit into one that does. Every room is different: add the beam, the duct or the garage door to the GSV Sim Builder and it checks the whole club against it, inch by inch, wherever the tee goes. A beam can also run front to back, or stand up a side wall.

In a garage, the door and its opener hang over the room when the door is open. The builder takes a garage door with its tracks and opener, open or shut. The garage golf simulator page has nine real builds.

Launch monitors for a low ceiling

Launch monitors go in one of three places: on the floor beside the ball, on the floor behind it, or on the ceiling. Under a low ceiling the place decides the list.

On the floor: most need no height of their own

A unit beside the ball or behind it sits on the floor, so the ceiling only has to clear the swing. These are the low-ceiling answer at every price.

  • Beside the ball: Square Golf, the Garmin R50, Foresight's GC3, GCQuad and QuadMAX, the Bushnell Launch Pro, Uneekor's EYE MINI and EYE MINI LITE, and the GolfJoy Spica 3. A unit beside the ball also fits the shortest rooms, because it asks for no distance of its own.
  • Behind the ball: radar units such as the Garmin R10, the Rapsodo MLM2PRO, the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 and the Full Swing KIT. They need depth instead: 6 to 10 ft behind the ball by model, and 8 ft of ball flight in front of it.
  • The exception: the Trackman 4 sits behind the ball, but Trackman gives a minimum room height of 9 ft for it, floor to ceiling, and 10 ft from the ball to the screen.

On the ceiling: about 9 ft and up

A ceiling unit looks down at the hitting area from above, which is why it needs height. Each maker gives its own range, and they measure it in different ways:

Ceiling unitMaker's heightMeasured
Trackman iOLow version 8 ft 10 in to 9 ft 6 in; Mid 9 ft 4 in to 10 ft; High 9 ft 10 in to 10 ft 6 inFrom the turf to the ceiling
Uneekor EYE XO29 to 10 ftFrom the ground to the sensor in the manual; from the top of the hitting area to the bottom of the bracket in Uneekor's help center
ProTee VX9 to 10 ftFrom the top of the mount to the top of the hitting surface
TruGolf APOGEE9 to 10 ftAbove the hitting surface
GolfJoy Rigel 39 ft to 10 ft 2 inCeiling height
Foresight FalconIdeally 9 ft 6 in to 10 ft 6 inCeiling height

From Trackman's height specifications, Uneekor's EYE XO2 manual and help center, ProTee's support pages, TruGolf's APOGEE manual, GolfJoy's product page and Foresight's Falcon manual. The low version of the Trackman iO is for the iO only, not the iO DUO.

Under 9 ft, the makers are cautious. Uneekor asks for at least 9 ft and does not guarantee the EYE XO2's data when it is mounted outside its range. ProTee says the VX must be mounted 9 to 10 ft high for optimal performance, and has tested lower: at 8 ft 8 in it found no issues, at 8 ft 6 in it calls the VX low but working, with a ball such as the TP5 for high-speed shots, and at 8 ft 4 in too low, with a slight chance of a wedge hitting the unit. The GSV Sim Builder goes by the makers: under 9 ft the EYE XO2 does not fit, and the ProTee VX gets a caution down to 8 ft 8 in and does not fit below it. Under 9 ft, email GSV before buying one.

Enclosures and screens under a low ceiling

An enclosure has a fixed height, and GSV leaves 2 in above one to put it together. This is the least ceiling each needs:

SIG129 ft 4 in9 ft 6 in

Heights are from Shop Indoor Golf's product pages and Carl's Place's spec sheets. Under 8 ft 2 in, two choices are left:

  • A built-in screen, framed into the room from wall to wall. It stops about 12 in under the ceiling in the GSV Sim Builder, so it fits any ceiling and gives the biggest picture the room can hold.
  • A net. The lowest cost way to start hitting. A net shows no picture, so the shot is read on a tablet or a TV.

The projector under a low ceiling

Under a low ceiling the projector shares the space over the golfer with the swing. Three ways to keep them apart:

  • Ahead of the golfer. With the tee 10 ft from the screen, a short throw lens of about 0.5, such as the BenQ AH500ST, hangs ahead of the golfer, away from the backswing. Check it against the follow-through, which rises highest about 3 to 4 ft ahead of the ball.
  • On the floor. A short throw projector can sit on the floor in front of the screen. GSV reviewed the BenQ AH500ST for floor mounting.
  • Over the golfer, clear of the club. A longer lens hangs over or behind the golfer. The builder checks the top of the swing against the projector and moves it along its throw range to keep it clear where it can.

A low-ceiling checklist

  1. Measure the lowest point over the place the golfer will stand, and 6 ft either side of it: beams, ducts, lights, the garage door and its opener.
  2. Find your height in the chart, and add the mat and any platform.
  3. Take a slow practice swing with a driver where the tee will go.
  4. Pick a launch monitor that sits on the floor if the ceiling is under 9 ft, and not the Trackman 4, which Trackman specifies for 9 ft and up.
  5. Pick a screen that fits, with 2 in to spare above an enclosure.
  6. Keep the projector out of the swing: ahead of the golfer, on the floor, or checked against the top of the swing.
  7. Put the whole room in the GSV Sim Builder. It lays out the screen, the tee, the launch monitor and the projector in 3D and says what fits.

Swing indoors with caution. The figures in this guide are estimates, not guarantees. Always test your clearances before you make a full swing: start with slow practice swings with your longest club, and check the ceiling, the walls, the lights, the launch monitor, the projector and anyone standing nearby. Golf Simulator Videos and its affiliates take no responsibility for your safety, or for any injury or damage, when you swing indoors.

Low ceiling golf simulator questions

What is the minimum ceiling height for a golf simulator?

It depends on the golfer. In the GSV Sim Builder a driver clears an 8 ft 5 in ceiling for a 5 ft 9 in golfer and a 9 ft ceiling for a 6 ft 2 in golfer, standing on a 2.5 in mat. With 6 in of headroom that is 8 ft 11 in and 9 ft 6 in. These are GSV estimates: take a slow practice swing with a driver before buying.

Can you have a golf simulator with an 8 ft ceiling?

For a shorter golfer, yes. The builder has a driver clearing 7 ft 8 in for a 5 ft 3 in golfer, but it needs 8 ft 1 in for a 5 ft 6 in golfer, so a golfer of about 5 ft 6 in or taller cannot swing a driver under 8 ft. Irons and wedges can still work. Use a launch monitor that sits on the floor and a built-in screen or a net, since the lowest enclosure in this guide needs 8 ft 2 in.

What launch monitor works best with a low ceiling?

One that sits on the floor, beside the ball or behind it. Most need no height of their own, so the ceiling only has to clear the swing. The Trackman 4 is the exception: Trackman gives it a minimum room height of 9 ft. Ceiling units are specified from about 9 ft, and the low version of the Trackman iO from 8 ft 10 in, turf to ceiling.

Can a ceiling-mounted launch monitor work under 9 ft?

Only the low version of the Trackman iO is specified under 9 ft, from 8 ft 10 in. Uneekor, ProTee, TruGolf and GolfJoy specify about 9 ft and up, and Foresight ideally 9 ft 6 in to 10 ft 6 in for the Falcon. ProTee found the VX working at 8 ft 6 in and calls 8 ft 4 in too low. Email GSV before buying a ceiling unit for a ceiling under 9 ft.

Where can a beam or duct go over a golf simulator?

Right over the ball, or well clear of it. For a 5 ft 9 in golfer under a 9 ft ceiling, the builder puts a beam 8 ft off the floor in the swing from 2 ft 7 in to 3 ft 9 in behind the ball and from 3 ft 1 in to 4 ft 3 in ahead of it. Within 2 ft of the ball it is clear.

Does the hitting mat count against the ceiling height?

Yes. The golfer stands on the mat, so every inch of mat, turf or platform under the golfer comes off the ceiling. The chart on this page allows for a 2.5 in mat. A raised platform 6 in high needs 6 in more ceiling.

What enclosure fits a low ceiling?

A Carl's Place DIY enclosure, 8 ft tall, needs 8 ft 2 in. The SIG8 and SIG10, 8 ft 4 in tall, need 8 ft 6 in. GSV leaves 2 in above an enclosure to put it together. Under 8 ft 2 in, a built-in screen framed into the room fits any ceiling.

Where should the projector go with a low ceiling?

Out of the swing. A short throw projector with a lens of about 0.5 hangs ahead of the golfer with the tee 10 ft from the screen, or sits on the floor in front of the screen. A longer lens over the golfer has to clear the top of the swing, which the GSV Sim Builder checks.

Is there free help planning a low-ceiling golf simulator?
