BenQ LK830ST Review: 4K Short Throw Golf Simulator Projector

The BenQ LK830ST is a 4K laser projector with a 0.496 throw ratio: it fills a golf simulator screen from closer than any other 4K projector GSV has tested, and its 114% offset lets it sit on the floor, on an enclosure shelf or on the ceiling. Jay Lasco, host of Golf Simulator Videos, set it up on the floor of the GSV studio and ran 4K GSPro and Trackman Virtual Golf 3 through it. Here is what it does, where it mounts, what stood out, how it compares with the AH500ST and AK700ST, and who should buy one.

Why the 0.496 throw ratio matters

The throw ratio is the distance from the lens to the screen divided by the width of the picture. The lower it is, the closer the projector sits. Take an 8 ft tall 4:3 screen: to fill its height, a 16:9 projector throws a picture 14.2 ft wide. At 0.496 the LK830ST does that from 7.1 ft, which is what BenQ's own golf simulator planner gives. A projector at 0.69, like the AK700ST, needs 9.8 ft for the same screen. Those 2.7 ft decide whether the projector can sit ahead of the golfer, out of the swing.

Floor, enclosure or ceiling

At 114% offset the picture sits above the lens, so the LK830ST can sit level on the floor and throw up to fill the screen without being tilted, which is how Jay ran it. The same offset lets it sit on an enclosure's base shelf, or upside down on a ceiling mount close to the screen, where its lens ends up about 11 to 14 in above the top of the picture.

Auto vertical keystone squares the picture at the press of a button, and Corner Fit moves each corner on its own for a projector that is not perfectly square to the screen. Both are digital corrections, so a projector set square to the screen needs the least of them.

What Jay found

• The 4K is visible up close. On a 200 in screen the LK830ST puts about 485 pixels in every square inch, against about 121 for the 1080p AH500ST. That density lets someone standing close to the screen see more detail than from 12 to 14 ft away, and a simulator golfer stands close: GSV sets the tee 10 ft from the screen. Jay ran 4K GSPro and 4K Trackman Virtual Golf 3 through it to show the detail.
• Color. BenQ rates it at 93% of Rec. 709, against 83% for the original AH500ST, and it has BenQ's golf mode color settings.
• Screen Fill does the work of a graphics card setting. Pick the screen's shape in the menu and the projector reformats the picture without stretching it, and sends that back to the computer. Jay runs 16:9 on the PC monitor and 16:10 on the simulator screen at the same time, and the screen fills edge to edge.
• Same footprint as the AH500ST. The LK830ST is about the size of the AH500ST, with the same digital correction tools, so it drops into the same spots.
