Commercial Golf Simulator Build: A Freestanding SIGPRO Commercial at Tyrone Hills

By Jay Lasco Uneekor EYE XO

Planning a business? GSV's guide to opening a commercial golf simulator business features this free-standing build.

This is the commercial golf simulator GSV built at Tyrone Hills Golf Club in Michigan in 2024: a SIGPRO Commercial enclosure that stands on its own, in a glass-walled room that the club had used for storage, under a vaulted ceiling that rises from about 10 ft to about 16 ft, with an Uneekor EYE XO on the crossbar and the projector on the frame. It is now home to the Darren Husse Golf Academy, where PGA professional Darren Husse teaches on it. Jay Lasco, host of Golf Simulator Videos, built it with a small crew and tested it with Darren hitting. Here is every part, how it went together, how it keeps the ball safe, what stood out, and the parts in each spot today.

Why a freestanding enclosure here

The room has glass walls and a vaulted ceiling, about 10 ft at its lowest and about 16 ft at its peak, and the club wanted a simulator without making it a construction project. The SIGPRO Commercial stands on its own 2 in pipe frame, and the projector and the launch monitor mount to that frame, so nothing is fixed to the building. That suits golf clubs, bars and leased spaces, rooms with very tall ceilings, and anyone who wants to put a simulator up in the fall and take it down in the spring. Jay worked with Shop Indoor Golf on the sizing and the mounts.

How it went together

  • Two people and a few ladders. The pipe is heavy duty, so it takes two; three made it easy. The poles are labeled. It took about four hours.
  • Padding everywhere. The surround has padding built in, so no metal sticks out, and carpet-style padding runs around the screen and over the crossbar.
  • A blackout screen hangs behind the impact screen, because of the daylight through the windows.
  • The picture: 12 ft 6 in wide and 9 ft 8 in tall, a big 4:3 image from the projector on the frame, which holds up with the room lights on.

Keeping the ball in, and off the golfer

In a room surrounded by glass, no ball can get under the screen. The bottom of the screen wraps under a foam-wrapped cable at the floor and pulls back to the rear pole, held with a mix of ball bungees and zip ties, so the bottom is tight. Bounce back was tested with Darren hitting from a tee about 10 ft from the screen: irons stopped 2 to 3 ft off the screen, and drives at about 164 mph stopped 2 ft 6 in to 3 ft off it. Jay's point for any business: a ball that flies back can injure someone, and that is a liability. The bounce-back guide covers what makes the difference.

The room, and teaching in it

At almost 14 ft wide there is room to swing a club with no worry. Darren's view, from teaching on it: students who worry about hitting the enclosure or the ceiling stop making their real swing, so a bay should never feel cramped. Jay's note on the depth: the enclosure could go deeper, to the 15 ft deep size. With the simulator in, lessons at Tyrone Hills no longer stop in November, and Darren now prefers the winter for his biggest swing changes. The golf simulator business guide covers commercial bays, and are golf simulators worth it covers year-round teaching.

Open a bay like this in the Sim Builder

The GSV Sim Builder lays out a simulator in a room, in 3D, and checks the swing, the ceiling and the distances. The SIGPRO Commercial is not in it, so this link opens a 12 ft 6 in x 9 ft 8 in screen with an EYE XO overhead, in a room 14 ft wide and 20 ft long. The Sim Builder takes one ceiling height, and a vaulted ceiling has no single one, so the link uses a flat 12 ft, between the room's lowest and highest points. Enter your own space to see it fit.
