A golf simulator is worth it for a golfer who will use it most weeks, above all through a winter that closes the courses, and who has a room about 10 ft wide, 16 ft deep and 9 to 10 ft high. It is not worth it for a golfer who would play a few times a year, has no room that fits, or wants it to replace the course: at the $45 to $65 an hour two X-Golf locations charge for a bay, renting stays cheaper for a long time. Who a simulator is worth it for

• The winter golfer. In Michigan, where GSV is based, lessons at Tyrone Hills Golf Club used to stop about November. A simulator turns those months into practice and rounds.
• The golfer who practices with numbers. Every shot measured, without the drive to a range.
• The household that will share it. One the family and friends use earns its cost faster.
• The golfer who already rents bays often. At two hours a week, a winter of bay bills reaches the price of a $5,000 build in about three winters.

Who should skip it, or wait

• The occasional player. A few bay sessions a year cost far less than any build, and the bay fee covers the whole group.
• A room that does not fit. Darren Husse, the PGA professional who teaches on the Tyrone Hills bay, finds that students who worry about hitting the enclosure or the ceiling stop making their real swing.
• The golfer who wants the course. A simulator does not walk, give a sidehill lie or play like a real green.

The honest downsides

• Cost. From under $1,500 for a launch monitor and a net to $15,000 and up for a luxury room, by GSV's estimates, before running costs.
• The room. A full swing needs the same space at any budget: by GSV's rules for a 5 ft 9 in golfer, the tee at least 8 ft from the screen and 7 ft from the back wall.
• Accuracy at the low end. Against an Uneekor EYE XO, GSV found the Garmin R10's ball speed within about 1 mph, but some shots read side spin the wrong way. The Square Golf Home Edition reads spin best on its patterned balls.
• Subscriptions. GSPro is $250 a year, and some units add a plan: Rapsodo's Premium for the MLM2PRO is $199.99 a year.
• The computer. Most full software, GSPro included, needs a Windows gaming PC, which GSV puts at $800 to $1,500 and up.
• A cold garage. Launch monitors, projectors and PCs have operating temperatures, so warm the room first in winter.

What a home golf simulator costs

The launch monitor is usually 40 to 60% of a mid-range or premium build. Hitting strips and impact screens wear and are replaced in time.

A simulator against paying as you go

What the same golf costs without one, from published prices read October 18, 2026:

• A simulator bay: $45 to $65 an hour at X-Golf's Nashville and Franklin locations, charged by the bay for up to 6 players. X-Golf says one player plays 18 holes in about an hour.
• A range bucket: $12 for 90 balls at the City of Denton's range in Texas, $15 for 100 balls at Westchester County's Mohansic range in New York.
• A round: about $41 for 18 holes at municipal and daily-fee courses, by the National Golf Foundation (April 2, 2026), up 27% since 2019.

A golfer who would rent a bay 2 hours a week for 20 weeks spends $2,000 a winter. Less $250 for GSPro at home, each build pays back in:

Two limits. Four friends splitting a $50 bay pay $12.50 each, so a group that plays a few nights a winter should keep renting. And savings count only against money really spent: two large buckets a week for 20 weeks is $600. The real case for owning one is how much more it gets used.

What makes one worth the money

The room

The room size calculator checks a room against GSV's rules, and the GSV Sim Builder shows it in 3D. About 18 ft of depth gives the ideal 10 ft tee, and 14 ft wide with a 10 ft ceiling is not tight.

The launch monitor

It decides the data, the accuracy and the room. In the Sim Builder, 14 ft wide with a 10 ft ceiling, a Square Golf beside the ball fits at 14 ft 4 in of depth, a Garmin R10 behind it at 15 ft 6 in and a Mevo Gen 2 at 16 ft 6 in. The launch monitor finder matches units to a budget and a room.

The software

GSPro is $250 a year from GSPro, never free, on a Windows PC. Square Golf and FlightScope list no yearly fee for the Square Golf Home Edition or the Mevo Gen 2; the Rapsodo MLM2PRO needs Premium for course play and GSPro. See the GSPro guide.

Resale

GSV does not track used prices. The launch monitor and the mat carry over to a bigger build, but memberships may not: by Rapsodo's FAQ, its memberships are not transferable. Ask about any plan before buying used.
