Garmin makes two launch monitors for a home golf simulator, and they could hardly be more different. The Approach R50 is a $4,999.99 camera unit that sits beside the ball with its own 10 in screen and runs a simulator with no phone or PC. The Approach R10 is a $599.99 pocket-size radar that sits behind the ball and runs from a phone or tablet. Both play Garmin's Home Tee Hero courses with a Garmin Golf membership, and both are on GSPro's list. Jay Lasco, host of Golf Simulator Videos, has filmed the R10 since Garmin sent one in 2021 and the R50 since January 2026. Below: price and what you pay each year, the data, balls and stickers, the room each needs, putting, software, what Jay found with each, and which to buy.
Code first: GSV5OFF takes 5% off a first order at Shop Indoor Golf, on either unit. At GSV's checkout an R50 came to $4,750.00 from $4,999.99. No other GSV code covers a Garmin unit on its own, so GSV5OFF saves the most on both.

The short answer
- Garmin R50: a simulator in one box. Three cameras read the ball beside the tee, so it needs no marked balls and adds no depth to the room. Home Tee Hero runs on its own 10 in touchscreen or on a TV or projector over HDMI, with no phone or PC, and it has an official GSPro connection over its built-in Wi-Fi.
- Garmin R10: the lowest price into a simulator, and a unit that goes in a pocket to the range. As a radar it sits 6 to 8 ft behind the ball, needs at least 8 ft of ball flight, calculates spin axis and face angle rather than reading them, and does not read putts. Titleist RCT balls help its spin indoors.
- Same membership, same courses: both run Home Tee Hero with a Garmin Golf membership, $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, and both connect to GSPro, E6 Connect and Awesome Golf.

Price, the membership and cost over three years
The units. The R50 is $4,999.99 and the R10 $599.99, by Garmin's list prices, a gap of $4,400. The R50 comes with a carrying case, the AC adapter and power cord and 250 club tracking stickers. The R10 comes with a tripod stand, a phone mount, a carry case, a micro USB cable and a Garmin Golf membership trial.
The membership. Neither unit needs one for its shot data and the driving range. Home Tee Hero course play does: Garmin says an active Garmin Golf membership is needed with an R10 or an R50, at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. GSPro is separate paid software, $250 a year from GSPro, on a Windows PC, and does not need the Garmin membership.
| Three years, list prices | R50 | R10 |
|---|---|---|
| The unit, range and data | $4,999.99 | $599.99 |
| Plus Home Tee Hero ($99.99 a year) | $5,299.96 | $899.96 |
| Plus GSPro ($250 a year) | $5,749.99 | $1,349.99 |
| Plus both | $6,049.96 | $1,649.96 |
Before codes, tax and shipping. The PC for GSPro, and the phone or tablet the R10 runs from, are not counted. The R50 needs neither for Home Tee Hero.
The data
R50. With any ball, its cameras give ball speed, launch angle, launch direction, spin rate, spin axis, apex height, carry, total distance and deviation. With one round sticker on the top middle of the club face, it adds club speed, club path, angle of attack and face angle. Shop Indoor Golf counts over 15 ball and club figures. From GSV's unboxing it also has a built-in barometer, to practice at your own elevation, and impact video of the strike.
R10. Garmin lists 14 numbers, but not all are read. When Garmin first released its accuracy figures, it split them: club head speed (within 3 mph), ball speed (within 1 mph), launch angle and launch direction (within 1 degree) are measured by the radar; face angle (within 2 degrees), apex height (within 5 ft), carry (within 5 yd) and spin axis are calculated. On short chips indoors there is not enough ball movement for the radar to give attack angle, path or face.
So the R50 reads the full set of ball figures, spin axis included, with any ball, and its club data from one sticker. The R10 measures speed and launch well for its price and estimates the rest.
Balls, stickers and lighting
- R50: any golf ball, with no marked balls. Garmin suggests turning the logo toward the unit, but it is not required. Club data takes one sticker on the face, and 250 come in the box. It uses infrared, so only very harsh, bright light on the ball causes trouble.
- R10: any ball reads speed and launch. For spin indoors, Garmin says Titleist RCT balls give up to a 30 times more accurate spin reading and up to 50% better carry accuracy. RCT balls are not required, and outdoors the radar sees enough of the flight without them.
The room each needs
By Garmin's manuals, the R50 goes about 1 ft 6 in to the side of the tee, facing it, at about the height of the tee, and it compensates for an uneven floor. The R10 goes on the floor 6 to 8 ft behind the tee, lined up with the tee and the target, with the tee at least 8 ft from the net or screen, and the ball anywhere in a 2 x 2 ft hitting area that starts 6 ft from the unit.
| GSV Sim Builder, 14 ft wide, 10 ft ceiling | R50 | R10 |
|---|---|---|
| Shortest room that fits | 14 ft 4 in deep | 15 ft 6 in deep |
| With nothing to watch | 17 ft deep | 17 ft deep |
| Lowest ceiling, nothing to watch, 20 ft deep | 8 ft 11 in | 8 ft 11 in |
For a 5 ft 9 in golfer, from GSV's room table for every launch monitor. Beside the ball, the R50 adds no depth: the swing behind the golfer and the ball flight set it. The R10 shares the space behind the tee with the golfer, so a short room favors the R50. The R10 sits on the target line behind the ball, so it does not move between right and left-handed golfers. Lay out your own room in the GSV Sim Builder or check it in the room size checker.
Putting
- R50: putting in Home Tee Hero, with a gimme distance. Jay's R50 short game video, made after Garmin's firmware updates, putts on an 11 stimp green in Home Tee Hero and then on GSPro, with 1.6 mph putts to test the low-speed threshold and a 55 ft lag putt.
- R10: it does not read putts, so GSPro and other software use an auto putt mode.
Every launch monitor that putts is in the putting simulators for home guide.

From Shop Indoor Golf's pages, gsprogolf.com and GSV's Garmin videos, read October 19, 2026. Home Tee Hero has more than 43,000 courses, by Garmin, and became its own app for the R10 on January 20, 2026, with On-Course Practice and 15 enhanced courses, so the R10 gets much the same course play as the R50. The R10 connects to one device at a time. More in the GSPro guide and the E6 Connect guide.
What Jay found with each
GSV has not filmed the two side by side, so these are separate tests.
- R10 against an Uneekor EYE XO (2021): 7 ft behind the ball with 10 ft of flight to the screen. Ball speed was within about 1 mph on every club, from a 30 yd chip to the driver, and launch direction was close. Driver launch read lower, 14.9 against 17.8 degrees on one drive, and some side spin read the wrong way.
- R10 with Titleist RCT balls (2022): spin stayed mostly within 100 to 200 rpm of the Uneekor, while a stick-on metal dot had some large misses. It read total spin indoors, not spin axis.
- R10 with the new Home Tee Hero app (2026): Augusta on an iPad Pro and a projector, with spin that looked right on an RCT ball.
- R50 (2026): the unboxing and setup in the GSV studio, driver on GSPro with club data, chipping and putting on Home Tee Hero and GSPro, nine holes of Pebble Beach in Home Tee Hero, and TruGolf's E6 Apex with the R50.
Which to buy
- You should buy the R50 if you want a dedicated simulator room, even a short one, play with no phone or PC, no marked balls, spin axis and club data read rather than estimated, and putting in Home Tee Hero.
- You should buy the R10 if you want the lowest cost and a unit that also goes to the range, have a room 15 ft 6 in deep or more, and play Home Tee Hero or GSPro from a phone, tablet or PC. Add Titleist RCT balls indoors.
- For GSPro either way: both are on GSPro's list, at $250 a year on a Windows PC.

Garmin R50 vs R10 questions
What is the difference between the Garmin R50 and R10?
The R50 is a $4,999.99 camera unit that sits 1 ft 6 in beside the ball, with its own 10 in touchscreen and HDMI out, so it runs a simulator with no phone or PC. The R10 is a $599.99 pocket-size radar that sits 6 to 8 ft behind the ball and runs from a phone or tablet. The R50 reads spin axis and club data, needs no marked balls and putts in Home Tee Hero; the R10 calculates spin axis and face angle and does not read putts.
Is the Garmin R50 worth $4,400 more than the R10?
For a dedicated simulator room, often yes: it fits a shorter room, needs no phone, PC or marked balls, reads spin axis and club data, and putts in Home Tee Hero. For the lowest cost, a room 15 ft 6 in deep or more and a unit that also goes to the range, the R10 does the job. GSV has not tested them side by side.
Do the Garmin R50 and R10 need a subscription?
Not for their shot data and the driving range. Home Tee Hero course play needs a Garmin Golf membership on either unit, $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. GSPro is separate, $250 a year from GSPro, and does not need the Garmin membership.
Which needs less room, the Garmin R50 or R10?
The R50. It sits beside the ball, so it adds no depth. In the GSV Sim Builder, a room 14 ft wide with a 10 ft ceiling fits the R50 from 14 ft 4 in deep and the R10 from 15 ft 6 in, and both from 17 ft with nothing to watch.
Do the Garmin R50 and R10 read putts?
The R50 putts in Home Tee Hero, and Jay putted with it on Home Tee Hero and GSPro. The R10 does not read putts, so GSPro and other software use an auto putt mode.
Do the Garmin R50 and R10 work with GSPro?
Yes. GSPro lists both as officially supported: the R50 connects over its built-in Wi-Fi and the R10 over Bluetooth, each with GSPro on a Windows PC. GSPro is $250 a year from GSPro.
Do you need marked balls for the Garmin R50 or R10?
Not for the R50: its cameras read any ball, and club data takes one sticker on the face, with 250 in the box. For the R10 indoors, Garmin says Titleist RCT balls give up to a 30 times more accurate spin reading; they are recommended, not required.
Is there a discount code for the Garmin R50 or R10?
Yes. GSV5OFF takes 5% off a first order at Shop Indoor Golf, one use, on either unit. At GSV's checkout an R50 came to $4,750.00 from $4,999.99.
Is there free help choosing between them?
Yes. GSV's partner builders, master builders Jay hand-picked, offer a free consultation: they check that the launch monitor, the room and the screen fit before you buy, and offer package deals, DIY packages and full installation.
