Golf simulator tees come in two kinds: a real wooden or plastic tee pushed into the mat, or a rubber or 3D printed tee that stands on it. Which one to use depends on the mat. Some mats take a real tee anywhere, some take one only in the hitting strip or a tee holder, and some take no real tee at all. Jay Lasco, host of Golf Simulator Videos, has hit off real tees in a Fiberbuilt Tee Box and a Carl's Place HotShot. Below: which mats take a real tee, rubber, 3D printed and tethered tees, how high to tee it on a mat, and what Jay found.
Codes first: GSVMAT takes $20 off the SIGPRO Softy, Super Softy, Softy LITE and Commercial TeeLine mats at Shop Indoor Golf, and on a first order over $400, GSV5OFF takes more: 5% off. GSV5OFF also covers the Fiberbuilt mats there. The Carl's Place code, for the HotShot and TrueStrike mats, is sent by email from the Carl's Place discount code page.

On this page: the short answer, which mats take a real tee, rubber, 3D printed and tethered tees, tee height on a mat, strips, holders and wear, what Jay found, where to buy, free consultation and questions.
The short answer
- A real tee is the most like the course: you set the height every shot, and the ball sits the way it would outdoors. Use one on any mat built for it.
- A rubber tee fits every other mat: it stands on the surface at a fixed height and lasts a long time, so keep two or three heights on hand, one for the driver and one for the woods and hybrids.
- The mat decides: a thin roll-up mat or a plain turf mat has nowhere to hold a real tee, so check the mat before buying tees.

From Shop Indoor Golf's SIGPRO mat specifications, Fiberbuilt's and Carl's Place's pages and On Deck Sports, read October 19, 2026. The SIG8, SIG10 and SIG12 mats and the Fairway Series 5 x 5 take a real tee too, by Shop Indoor Golf. Every mat GSV has built with is in the golf simulator mat guide.
Rubber, 3D printed and tethered tees
- Rubber tees stand on the mat at a fixed height and last a long time. They are the answer for the Softy LITE, the SIGPRO Turf Golf Mat and any thin or roll-up mat. Sets come in several heights: golf simulator rubber tees on Amazon.
- 3D printed tees are rigid plastic tees made to stand on a mat, often in a range of exact heights, and Shop Indoor Golf names them for the Softy LITE: 3D printed golf simulator tees on Amazon.
- Tethered tees hang on a cord tied to the mat, so a driver does not send the tee into the screen or under the enclosure: tethered golf tees on Amazon.
- Real wooden or plastic tees in a mat built for them: the cheapest of all, and the closest to the course.
How high to tee it on a mat
Set the ball where it would sit on the course. With a driver, most golfers tee it so about half the ball sits above the top of the club at address. With woods and hybrids, a low tee just off the surface; with irons, many golfers hit straight off the mat. A real tee lets you change that every shot. A rubber tee fixes it, so match one to the driver and one to the woods.
The tee is also where every launch monitor measures from. A radar such as the Garmin R10 or the FlightScope Mevo Gen 2 sits a set distance behind it, a camera unit such as the Garmin R50 sits beside it, and an overhead unit hangs from the ceiling over the hitting area, so the tee stays in one spot. The GSV Sim Builder lays the mat, the tee and the launch monitor in your room at their real sizes.
Strips, holders and wear
- SIGPRO Softy: the tee goes into a soft foam strip under 1 in of TeeLine turf, and the strip swaps out when it wears, $249.99 for the Softy 4 x 7 ft strip at Shop Indoor Golf, without replacing the mat.
- Fiberbuilt: the Tee Box takes a real tee anywhere in the turf; the Player Preferred and Fiberbuilt Grass panels take a real tee through a friction-fit holder, and Fiberbuilt Grass takes a rubber tee too. The panels rotate 180 degrees to spread the wear. More in the Fiberbuilt golf mat review.
- Carl's Place HotShot: the 30 x 12 in insert comes as standard turf, which takes a real tee, foam or gel.
- TrueStrike: the tee receiver holds a real wooden or plastic tee at any height and keeps it from flying off each shot.
The mat sits on the floor or the turf around it; the golf simulator flooring guide covers setting it in level.

What Jay found
- Fiberbuilt Tee Box (2022): real tees went in anywhere on the mat, it forgave a swing that hits down into the ball, and it grabbed the club on a chunk, so distances stayed realistic.
- Carl's Place HotShot (2023): with the standard insert, a heavy rubber base and a deep pile that takes real tees. His would not sit flat, though it played fine.
- SIGPRO Softy LITE (2024 budget build): forgiving underfoot and it does not move around; its strip takes no real tee.

Golf simulator tee questions
Can you use a real tee on a golf simulator mat?
On many. The SIGPRO Softy, Super Softy and Commercial TeeLine take a real tee, the Fiberbuilt Tee Box takes one anywhere, the Fiberbuilt studio mats and TrueStrike take one through a tee holder, and the Carl's Place HotShot takes one in its standard insert. The SIGPRO Softy LITE and the SIGPRO Turf Golf Mat do not; use rubber or 3D printed tees.
What tees do you use on a golf simulator mat?
A real wooden or plastic tee on a mat built for one, and a rubber or 3D printed tee on a thin or roll-up mat with nowhere to hold one. A tethered tee stays tied to the mat, so a driver does not send it into the screen.
How high should you tee the ball on a golf mat?
Where it would sit on the course: with a driver, about half the ball above the top of the club at address for most golfers, a low tee for woods and hybrids, and straight off the mat for irons. A rubber tee fixes the height, so keep one for the driver and one for the woods.
Does the SIGPRO Softy LITE take a real tee?
No. Shop Indoor Golf says its strip cannot take a real tee; use rubber or 3D printed tees. The thicker SIGPRO Softy, Super Softy and Commercial TeeLine do take one.
Does a Fiberbuilt mat take a real tee?
Yes. The Tee Box takes a real tee anywhere in its Performance Turf, and the studio mats take one through a friction-fit tee holder in the hitting panel. In Jay's 2022 review, real tees went in anywhere on the Tee Box.
What are tethered golf tees?
Tees tied to the mat on a cord, so they stay put when the driver hits them instead of flying into the screen or under the enclosure.
Is there a discount code for golf simulator mats?
Yes. GSVMAT takes $20 off the SIGPRO Softy, Super Softy, Softy LITE and Commercial TeeLine at Shop Indoor Golf, and on a first order over $400, GSV5OFF takes more: 5% off, which also covers the Fiberbuilt mats there. The Carl's Place code is sent by email.
