GARMIN R10: TITLEIST RCT VS METAL DOT! I WAS SURPRISED!

In this video we take the Garmin R10 and review the Titleist RCT Ball vs using a Metal Dot. After Garmin released the latest Approach R10 update everyone I talked to was seeing better spin results. The question came though did you have to buy the Titleist RCT for Garmin R10 or could you use the more traditional metal dot so many radar systems have used in the past. Garmin International, Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NYSE: GRMN), today announced a collaboration with Titleist, the No. 1 ball in golf®, to bring enhanced compatibility between the Approach® R10 launch monitor and Titleist’s Pro V1® and Pro V1x® RCT golf balls. By using the Titleist RCT’s radar capture technology, golfers receive a more precise measurement on their Garmin Approach R10 portable launch monitor, including up to a 30 times more accurate reading of spin rate and up to a 50-percent increase in carry distance accuracy.

The Titleist RCT golf ball is optimized for indoor spin capture and engineered for radar-based launch monitors such as the Approach R10 to provide the most accurate golf ball data.

This is exciting information coming from Garmin. Previously as they stated in documentation using a metal dot or tracking ball would actually hurt spin accuracy. Clearly they have found a way to integrate this now with their radar and hopefully it give a high level of spin accuracy indoors which everyone surely would love to see.

Now, keep in mind we are talking about backspin, no spin axis. Even high end units like Trackman 4 that are using the RCT ball are only using it to increase backspin readings, not side spin. So the Garmin R10 might still have a little difficulties with gear effect like we have explained in the past. With no way of knowing a driver shot was hit off the toe and not measuring spin axis the Garmin R10 most likely will still have a larger margin of error for spin axis. I think as long as everyone is aware of this there is not issue with that. After all we are talking about a $599 unit that provides some solid data based on our testing.
