When looking to start your own home golf simulator build here are some useful tips and tricks to help get you started. First make sure you have the space. Nobody wants to hit a driver on the ceiling or have their system not read right because there is not enough space. This can be specific to your launch monitor or hardware so plan ahead!
Choose the right material! You want to have turf that is nice to hit off of and you also want to be able to have a putt roll out right rather than bounce off a ledge or something. Noise is also a factor especially for driver shot so be sure to use curtains or baffles to absorb the sound of loud driver shots.
Pick the right projector for the space. If you have a room that is not dark enough you will need more lumens to have a screen that is bright enough, if you want a better picture this is also the base. Remember projectors can not produce a “black” so they need the room to be at least somewhat dark. I recommend a short throw projector so you do not have a head sticking up on the bottom of the screen.
Choosing a computer is very important. Make sure you focus on the graphics cars. Most software now will need something like a GTX1060 or above to run the proper frame rate for smooth 3D motion.

What is a Golf simulator?
A golf simulator is a set of equipment that allows you to play golf on a graphically simulated golf course. It is a combination of software and hardware like simulator mats, sonic sound system, optical sensor system, radar, ball tracking system and cameras. A golf simulator presents club speed, clubface angle and impact, club path, ball path, ball speed, horizontal and vertical launch angle, and spin.
The first golf simulator was launched in 1970. From then to now many types of equipment have been added to the golf simulators. But the main equipment of a golf simulator are-
There are a number of different technologies in use presently. Principally they either track ball flight or club head motion. Ball flight is typically tracked via wavelength (infrared), audio, Cameras, and/or laser sensors. These instruments serve as a means by which the ball’s flight properties are tracked, namely launch angle, ball speed and ball direction. Club motion is similarly tracked via wavelength sensors or other devices such tethers, cameras, or lasers, which record the speed and direction of the club’s head as well as the impact point of the ball on the club’s striking surface. In some cases, based on the location of the sensing devices, it is now possible to capture data on both ball and club for most accurate speed and directional information, and simulated ball flight behavior.
The data collected is extrapolated to provide ball flight trajectory and roll out according to certain calculated relationships to the ball’s flight performance per the tracked motion of the ball or club, adding environmental aspects through which the ball is projected, including terrain, wind, rain and other such influences or obstacles.
The way that the information is tracked varies as much as having a wall-sized screen recording ball speed and placement upon impact, to sensors that record the moments before, during and after the impact between the ball and club, in which case, the ball is held by a tether.
